Physical and Mechanical Properties of Poplar Wood Modified by Glucose-Urea-Melamine Resin/Sodium Silicate Compound

In order to improve the performance of soft plantation wood, an environmentally friendly wood modifier was developed. First, using urea and melamine as crosslinking agents, glucose-urea-melamine resin (MUG) prepared with glucose under catalysis inorganic acid metal ions. Then MUG, sodium silicate, distilled water were mixed stirred at 40 °C prepare MUG resin/sodium silicate compound (G20S10, G10S20, subscript number represents mass percentage component in solution.). poplar (Populus tomentosa) impregnated modified them. Their physical mechanical properties tested compared those treated 20% fraction (S20). Infrared analysis showed that amino characteristic structure (CO-NH-) existed absorption peak furan ring (C=C) appeared. Compared S20 shrinkage degree G10S20 or G20S10 is reduced, their moisture decreased, dimensional stability improved. can effectively enhance wood’s density, modulus elasticity, rupture, compression strength. SEM there columnar granular solid substances attached cell wall, lumen, intercellular space, vessel wood. EDX Si elements on wall significantly increased control, indicating entered wall. The greatly through organic–inorganic synergistic effect. It a green, non-formaldehyde, low cost broad application prospects.
